shut down system

Jong Hyun Choi and Jae Sung Park gave us a presentation about the game industry and the Shut down system caused by the developing game industry, which strictly regulates playing game at night, especially for people under 19. Id like to talk about the Shut down system. As there are many computer addictive people, this Shut down system has been emerging effective. There are several ways of Shut down system and representative systems are the quarter system, the selective system and so on.
However, I believe none of them works effectively because theres always a way for under age people to get through the system that looks like a dead end. When I was in high school, I was crazy over computer games and spent more than 15 hours a day. Then I got warned from my mom and she finally set the lock on the computer, but I pulled it away and just played games as usual. Like this case, if he or she really wants to play games, nothing can stop him or her playing games. Even though some say they are going to set a strict regulation and a system requiring   IDs, it looks dumb also. As internet is developed, people easily get some hack programs or abusing programs by just a search.
Then, what can effectively cure addiction? Maybe thats education and consciousness followed from education. Desire cant be stopped by a physical way. So my idea is that there must be replacement encouraging him or her to focus on. If it happens, there must be a game industry market healthier than ever.

Still Poor environment, but..

On May 16, 2011, Hye-woon Hwang and Sol Choi gave us a presention. It’s about the working environment in Korea, including working time, salary, productivities and so on. The presentation showed that Korea has recently developed well and been one of OECD countries, but the working environment of Korea’s is seriously terrible among OECD ones. I roughly guess it’s because Korea has only focused on developing after the 6.25 war in 1950, and because Korea had been ruled by Japan for 36 years, lagging dealing with high-technologies from western countries behind Japan. Then, I’d like to talk over the question asked in class.
The first one was if the labor productivity relates to working environment. In class, everyone said the labor productivity is related to the working environment and I also say yes, because I think it has a great effect on the working environment by using latest equipment and convenient offices, and also by working and dealing with nice co-workers and customers. Those factors definitely make workers in a good mood and the productivity will increase as following effects. Yet, I don’t say those above are always good for productivities. For instance, with using good equipment, a computer, an employee could just kill time or just do wrong jobs, not right jobs.
The second one was whether over working time is necessary and over payment delays productivities. In this case, answers were divided into two groups in light of money. Some of groups said over working is necessary because they could get money by over working, but the other groups said they didn’t want to over-work because money wasn’t everything. For me, over working is necessary, but my point of view is not over money. These days, people may say money talks, money is a golden key or money is the most valuable thing ever, etc. However, my point is about especially when a company I work for is going under investment or so. In other word, it can be loyalty to the company. Next is whether over payment delays productivities. I believe that yes, it does. Payment is a kind of promise and of contract between an employer and an employee, so it has to be kept at right time.
Final one is about Growth-oriented development in Korea. As I mentioned above in the first paragraph, Korea has only focused on developing economy and living better, but hasn’t done on the quality of working because there was not enough time to consider it. Then, the problem is that though Korea has already well-developed, the quality is still poor. I hope Korea would more care about the quality of working environment to increase productivities, despite its trying. If Korea has well cooperated with this idea, all we have to do is wait for the time coming, which Korea is well known for good working environment.

Abortion can be kept!

On May 9, Jae-hyun, So-jin and Sang-chul gave us a presentation. It was all about abortion in Korea. They well explained the two sides between pro-life and pro-choice. Debating seemed endless, but we didn’t get enough time to talk about so I’d like to mention what I didn’t say in class.
I don’t exactly say which side I’m on. For me, both pro-life and pro-choice look totally right because it really depends on situations. However, this time I’d like to be on supporting abortion.  If we consider moms’ side, we fully know that moms don’t want to abort their babies away. Think Who Likes it? Probably nobody does. Though the rate of abortion has increased unfortunately, that’s not all from abusing, but someone who ran into an unexpected situation like rape, unexpected pregnancy, etc. We have to give the woman another chance by letting her abort her baby. I don’t know it’s so cruel and brutal that people have to avoid and don’t know the embryo is already a human, but one thing I know is that it’s her decision. She may know the bad memory follows her every moment after aborting. Think how sad she will be. It should be indescribably sad for her. Instead of lashing out at her, we’d better praise her bravery and understand what hardships she has gone through. What would you do if you or your one were in the shoes? For me, I would let her abort and cheer her up, instead of making her gloomier.
Even though I said abortion is right to do, I mentioned the story aside from abusing abortion. Good things always coexist with bad ones. In other words, it’s still controversial. Thus, government should handle every case deeply and develop the law about abortion more specifically. So everybody will be treated fairly.

GO! GO! GMO!

On April 25, 2011, Su Jin Yoon and Jung Min Lee gave the presentation about Pros and Cons of GMO, Genetically Modified Organisms. They gave us an example of food genetically modified.  That was a quite refreshment and actually surprised me that people from the world, even this moment somewhere, eat GM food. It looks harmful that people eat GM food because a way of GMO is against the nature. In fact, two presenters well showed that there were real cases of bad effects of GMO, such as Brazil nuts incident and super salmons. However, I believe there are also good effects of GMO on the world. So I’d like to mention good sides of GMO
First of all, all people from the class on Monday said ”NO” to GMO that was not reconmmendable and was not good at all because, as I mentioned above, it looks against the nature and because they might think, by eating GM food, they might get sick. So, they even expressed the opinions that GMO products must be labeled with the GMO tags and the law on them must be more strict. I totally agree to those two opinions. People have rights to know if a product consists of GMO.
However, does GMO only affect people, the world, or other living creatures badly? That may be, I think, a really controversial topic which we need to more debate on. As I said, WE in THIS WORLD are eating GM food either with knowing or without doing at this moment, but few are totally bad cases of GMO. Moreover, people become living longer and longer compared to the people in the past. I’m not saying the reason people live longer is having GM food, but I’m saying having GM one may have a good effect on the nature.
It’s still a debatable topic. Some people go for pros, some for cons. I think there’s no perfection in this world. If there are pros, there must be cons following, and vice versa. So, Why don’t we take a good side of GMO like making bio-energy, providing starving people in Africa with food, etc, while making a progress and reducing the bad effects? It’s time to make a decision and take a next step. MAKE THE WORLD HAPPY!

What a Social Commerce

Lim bo-ra and Kim tae-won gave a presentation about social commerce (SC), which is a trend these days in Korea. It was given on April 18, 2011. They well explained from the definition of SC to its pros and cons, and to some information we hadn’t known. According to their presentation, SC has spread since the company, Groupon, appeared which means a blend of Group and Coupon. And, according to theirs, we could not possibly learn that it’s the trend, but still developing business as well. So I’d like to mention about the reason why SC is the trend, problems following and solutions in order.
First of all, SC emerged and was well known in the U.S. because of the price half off or so. So, many people have got interested in it, it becoming more popular and popular. Likewise, it is already quite well known in Korea due to the same reason as the U.S.’s. The basic conception of SC is to serve tickets or coupons more cheaply than originally they cost, and I think the outline is quite effective enough to make customers buy them. And, as SC is being the trend, another outline is also effective that companies try to give customers as many choices as they can do. Due to the fact, SC ticket-buyers can purchase quite various coupons ranging from entertainment to bistro.
SC in Korea looks as if there were no problem, but it is NOT. At the beginning of SC, the first problem was that, for instance, even though they bought a ticket for a restaurant-use, people couldn’t know whether or not the restaurant served good food. Yet, the internet system has gone highly developed, the problem has almost gone away, but other emerged. These days many companies in SC think bigger a company is, more easily it wins. So, they just advertised a lot on media to win the competition. Over the problem, customers don’t know which information is right or wrong. The second problem is that SC is the business every company can easily start and stop, so many of them stop without notifying customers of its quit, though customers already paid for what a coupon cost. So, the rate of complaints got high. Finally, it is about the refund system. Although SC companies advertise “This coupon is unavailable on weekends.” or “This coupon is not refundable.”, the letter is too small for customers to notice. Then, customers are buying regrets. These kinds of problems can be solved ASAP and the solution I might give you is following below.
The first solution I might give you is not to use and not to buy coupons from unknown companies because it can be risky, in case companies run off. The second one is to read specific information written on advertisement so that you can complain or accuse companies of their abusing. The last one is not to use SC. It sounds no sense, but if you don’t use it, you will just regret not buying tickets at worst.

Cohabitation is right or wrong?

Chang-min and Sang-chul gave us the presentation on Cohabitation. It was given on April 11, 2011. I think the topic they picked was so controversial that we could discuss it well, and, for me, we debated it well. Due to the fact that Koreans go for Confucianism, they still don’t like cohabitation. Then, two presenters well introduced what the cohabitation was and the problems of cohabitation were. So, we could possibly understand what’s going on these days in Korea. They picked some problems caused in Korea especially when cohabitation happened. Firstly, it was a   media effect. Secondly, it was the problem from systems for cohabitation and so on.  I’d like to mention about problems, my opinions and some solutions for cohabitation.
About cohabitation especially in Korea, it hasn’t been spread as much as other countries’ ones. Yet, Cohabitation is slightly increasing year by year. I think the reason is quite mixed, which means this event is not happening because of a factor, but of many factors. Then, one reason is that Koreans like getting westernized. So, compared to the past, couples easily go cohabitate. Presenters also mentioned another reason that one of main factors these days was because of media effects. I, however, don’t think they much affect the rate of cohabitation, though they exampled “우결(We get married)” on MBC, which looks quite effective for people to cohabitate because it can’t be a main factor. People, including adults, or students old enough, or so, already know what the cohabitation is, so 우결 didn’t affect the rate, I believe. Except for the disagreement, I fully agree with the opinion two gave us that Korea doesn’t have the system for people cohabitating. Korea is still lack of many cultural things, for instance, cohabitation system, multi-racial problem, etc.
Finally, it’s so controversial that even there’s no one-side-decision in class which means that all people agree with one opinion. I think that it’s useless deciding which is right or which is wrong because everything for cohabitation in Korea is unready. So, debating it is fine after systems for cohabitation is fixed and specific laws are issued.
